Glasgows tramcars appear to have a unique ability to spark off waves of nostalgia, even among people who are too young to remember them in their heyday. They have become a symbol of an era which has passed into history but, for many Glaswegians, the tram was as much a part of everyday life as the Co-Op and the weather.

In the 40 years that have elapsed since Glasgows official last tram, the city has changed dramatically, in both appearance and attitude. This album of photographs captures the trams place in the making of a city the scenes that no longer exist, the people who made the system work, the crashes, the strains of wartime and the emotional farewell.

TOM NOBLE is a Glasgow journalist who confesses to being a railways enthusiast. This is coupled with an interest in most forms of transport, except perhaps aircrft and camels, both of which, he claims, come into the category of they all look the same from a distance. Toms interest in railways led naturally to his curiosity to know more about trams and their place in the industrial archaeology and social history of Glasgow.
